Many police officers have been trapped in the Jigsaw web over the years, but the moralist killer and his disciples never targeted police officers exclusively — until now. Spiral: From the Book of Saw marks the triumphant return of a classic horror franchise generated in the early 2000s and a reimagination of Saw’s mythology perfectly adapted for the 2020s.

Saw is one of the films that helped to coined the term “torture pornography”. A reaction to the collective trauma of the 9/11 attacks (and the flood of unfiltered images that we were subjected to on that day’s news), the subgenre reflects an insensitive population and the need to take terror to extremes to provoke an appropriate reaction. It was an exercise in depravity, a testimony to a violent era and a test of endurance. But instead of continuing the tradition of simply pushing the boundaries, Spiral: From the Book of Saw has something to say.
The pig mask is an inheritance from previous Mortal Games films, but takes on a whole new meaning in Spiral. This time, it is clearly a way of insulting the police, which the killer of this film has as its exclusive target. Gone Billy, the tricycle puppet with black hair and white skin. In its place, we have Porky (at least that’s what I call it), a more traditional doll that further reinforces the pig’s motif. A pig dressed as a happy policeman on the trigger, Porky’s strings are visible — and that’s important. It represents the fact that someone else is in control. In other words, even a bad cop is being maneuvered (or empowered) by someone worse.

Chris Rock plays Det. Zeke Banks. He’s a good cop; the type of police officer you want on his side; a brave individual with the courage to stand up against corruption — even in his own department. He is a character that many Americans hope to encounter in real life. Policing and police brutality have been under the microscope in recent years. And while progress is being made to reform systematic failures in policing, there is still (for the most part) a “Blue Curtain”, a code of silence among the ranks of law enforcement when it comes to holding those responsible to account. Zeke Banks is not just Spiral’s hero; he is the kind of hero that society genuinely needs now.

Part of what makes Spiral so impactful is that the killer has the same motivations as Zeke, albeit with very different methods. While one is a renegade who works from the inside out, the other is a stranger — and a psychopath. But both hope to clean up the police department, an organization that operates under Article 8, a law that gave police officers carte blanche to clean the streets by any means necessary. Whether by design or coincidence, Spiral perfectly reflects the current change in society from repressive police tactics and a corrupt justice system.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw presents some of the best, most confusing and threatening pitfalls to date. The film receives its R rating, clearly pushing the MPAA to its limits. But, as I mentioned, Spiral is more than just “torture pornography” and more than just a police procedure. It’s about families: families destroyed by police violence and divorce, and families struggling to stay connected. Samuel L. Jackson plays Rock’s father, former police chief Marcus Banks. The two have a strained relationship, but throughout the film, they make efforts to reconnect. But there are things about older Banks that younger ones don’t know, secrets that will be revealed in a stomach-twisting climax.

This is funny? Chris Rock is in it, so it has to be funny, right? Well, there’s no denying that Rock is funny. He looks like a comedian — and I say that as a total compliment. The guy realized that comedy was a strong point and took his skills to the bank as a young man. He built a career out of his unique look and his kind of scorching humor. So yes, Spiral is sometimes funny (especially in a scene with Rock that mimics a shocking moment since the first Saw), but that does not represent a radical change of tone for the franchise. In essence, the film is still hardcore and definitely not for the faint of heart.

How do you solve a problem like Jigsaw? After the disastrous 2017 attempt to restart the Saw franchise, writers Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger make a second attempt to restart the engine of the oldest horror franchise of the 21st century.

How do you solve a problem like Jigsaw? After the disastrous 2017 attempt to restart the Saw franchise, writers Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger make a second attempt to restart the engine of the oldest horror franchise of the 21st century.

Spiral: From The Book of Saw is an appropriate title, as the ninth film in the Saw series borrows a few pages from its predecessors, but at the same time is content to do its own thing.

Make no mistake: this is an end-to-end Saw film. Just look at the return of the director of Saw II, III and IV Darren Lynn Bousman or the narrative structure, which features a bunch of corrupt characters (in this case, police) forced to atone for their perceived sins at the hands of a megalomaniac who hides behind of theatrical costumes of pig and puppets worthy of prizes. for evidence.

And yet, it’s the addition of instantly recognizable A-list talents like Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock (playing police father and son Marcus and Zeke Banks) to know that this isn’t his grandmother’s shot in Toronto — Actors from Canadian characters Saw *.

* To be clear: Spiral — like all Saw films — was * clearly * filmed in Toronto and features many Canadian actors like Zoie Palmer from Lost Girl, Dan Petronijevic from Letterkenny, Earth: Final Conflict Richard Zeppieri and Genelle Williams from Warehouse 13) .

What Rock and Jackson bring to Spiral is a level of prestige and curiosity that was lacking in the last few outings with Hoffman. Rock is a notable horror enthusiast and, more specifically, this franchise and Jackson is obviously no stranger to the genre, so it’s not an unusual career change for any of the actors. Admittedly, there is something exciting about the idea of a top talent coming on board a franchise that hasn’t seen its best days in over a decade (in this house, we started Saw VI).

The addition of Rock and Jackson also illustrates that this is not just the “making money on an inactive IP” that Jigsaw was so transparently. Whether hardcore Saw enthusiasts will embrace Spiral or the general public thirsty for a star-driven horror property will embrace the soft reboot, however, is another matter.

The shift to wider accessibility is evident in the general premise, namely that Spiral is an autonomous story. The film shows detective Zeke Banks (Rock) on the joke hunt to find an impersonator / disciple of the infamous Jigsaw killer (Tobin Bell, briefly glimpsed in a photograph) as policemen, including Zeke’s new partner, detective William Schenk (Max Minghella ), Detective Fitch (Zeppieri) and Captain Garza (Marisol Nichols) are targets of a series of complicated and terrible traps, tangentially aligned with their various crimes.

Although the film fits the overall chronology of the Saw franchise, it does not require extensive knowledge of the previous eight films, avoiding most of the series’ adventures in time in favor of somewhat conventional criminal proceedings. Don’t expect, for example, a jaw-dropping revelation like the previous entries for Bousman, Saw III and Saw IV, which were revealed to be happening simultaneously).

No, Spiral is more straightforward with regard to Saw’s narratives — a fact that can be detrimental to his success with fans of the long series, who are likely to find the revelation / resolution disheartening considering what they saw in the previous entries.

And therein lies the problem.

In many ways, Spiral doesn’t just play as an attempt to reboot the franchise, instead of an entry into the Saw of the past few days; in many ways, it looks like it’s not necessarily aimed at the series’s cult fan base. If anything, Spiral has a slightly diluted vibe, as if the film had been diluted to more broadly attract fans of the genre or — going a step further — the aficionados of the respective Rock and Jackson filmographies.
This does not mean that the film is not bloody and graphic; there are an abundance of Grand Guignol traps that inflict exquisite suffering on various characters (a trap can even be classified among the most painful the franchise has ever seen). But there are fewer of them than many of the older entries, and for the most part, what is shown is more tame than previous films. Spiral is not for the faint-hearted, but for horror enthusiasts, the tired and worn-out nickname of Torture Porn is less applicable here than the heyday of, say, the V-VII Mortal Games.

The question is whether this slightly diluted film by Saw A) will attract audiences who were indifferent to the series in the first place, B) recruit those who fell during the excess of sequences, or C) offend hardcore purists who still regularly discuss The incredible programming and Jigsaw work / life balance (I see you, Sawvivors, and you are loved).

The answer is: yes … probably.

The presence of Rock and Jackson will attract curious looks, while Saw’s questionable morality, disgusting body mutilation and classic visual signifiers should satisfy fans of the franchise. With a tenth record entry already being prepared, there is clearly a desire by Lionsgate to keep the games going, and Spiral lends itself well to a new series of films featuring bad people in power being punished by a narcissistic avenger.
